Q&A with Caitlin Pyle from Proofread Anywhere

Give us a brief background of who you are for those that don’t know.

My passion for proofreading started when I studied abroad in Germany for a year in college and would help students proofread their college essays. I loved using my grammar talent to catch errors and help others turn their writing into masterpieces.

That love for proofreading continued to grow. I took my general proofreading skills to the next level when I got into proofreading transcripts for court reporters back in 2012. I was so good at spotting errors, I became known as “Eagle Eyes.” In fact, proofreading transcripts became my primary source of income in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Because I was so passionate about proofreading, I started ProofreadAnywhere.com as a blog back in 2014, and it’s exploded since then.

In your current role, what do you help people achieve?

I help people find freedom by acquiring new skills that they can use to work at home.

How did you go about this career path?

It started out as a blog to inform people about how they can work at home without getting caught up in scams or MLMs, and it turns out the message I was offering really resonated with a lot of people.

Describe one or two moments in your life that shaped who you are today.

The first is the day I was fired. I had never been fired from any job, and I was brutally fired. One of my bosses even told me my butt was too big to be a personal trainer. I stayed in bed and watched TV for weeks. It was awful. I thought I was exactly what they said I was — a worthless piece of trash. This moment shaped me because it gave me a way out. I didn’t want to work there anymore and getting fired gave me the push I needed to get out the door and find my own thing. I never would have started Proofread Anywhere without this not-so-gentle push.

The second is starting Proofread Anywhere. It helped me dig myself out of the dark pit I found myself in after being fired. Not only that, I learned that I have a gift, and I could share my gift by teaching others. Now I get to impact people every day with a skill that I love.

What are aspiring and current entrepreneurs and freelancers missing when it comes to your area of expertise? How do you help bridge that gap?

First, they’re missing the technique and practice that makes a great proofreader. It’s so funny to see how many people come into my webinar or start my course thinking they’re already great at proofreading — but when they get into the nitty-gritty of it, they realize that they actually need both the technical skills and practice. I provide opportunities for both in my courses.

The other thing that most aspiring proofreaders are missing to have a successful proofreading business is action. So many people say they want to work from home or want to earn an extra $2k or $5k or however much a month, but when it comes time to taking action… they wait instead. Taking action is key — it’s going to be scary, but it’s necessary to climb that growth wall if you’re going to make it. My courses also help with this because the aspiring proofreader gains confidence as they are gaining skills. The more you learn and the more you practice, the more likely you are to take action and succeed.

We also have a great community for our students to reach out to.

Regarding your core products and services, what can you tell us about it? Why should we care?

People want more freedom with their work. Not only are people hoping to walk away from their corporate desk jobs, they also want to be able to work on their own time, in their own houses, on the beach, while raising kids — the possibilities are endless! But unfortunately, there are a lot of scams out there. Get-rich-quick schemes or companies that force you to hit up every family member and friend are targeting anyone who is looking for a new way to make money. Luckily there is a way to do it, and it is through learning new skills and hard work!

What is one resource (app, website, software, etc.) you use in your business that you haven’t shared with your audience and/or clients that we really should know about?

Honestly, there are so many tools my team and I use, but the tool that we probably use the most day-to-day is Google Drive. It’s just so easy for my team and I to collaborate, and it allows everyone’s voice to be heard and makes communication really easy.

Favorite book and favorite quote. Go!

There are so many books I love, but a current favorite is The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.

Quote: “It is never too late and you are never too old to create the life you want.”

If you were just starting your business today, what would be the first 2 or 3 things you would do to market yourself and your product/service? What would you do differently today vs. what you did to begin yours previously?

When I started, it went well because I had an excellent product that focused on helping people succeed, and I built relationships with those people. That’s what I would do all over again. In other words — Care about people and solve problems for them, and solve those problems well.

What’s really killing it for you as a marketing channel today?

Proofread Anywhere gets a lot of love from Pinterest, but really our biggest channel is affiliate relationships. If you can build the right relationships with the right blogs, you can build a business from that. People invest in products and services from people they know, like, and trust. So when you build relationships with people who already share your audience, you’re a few steps ahead of the game, and it’s much easier to gain people’s trust and help more people achieve their work-at-home dreams.

What is your biggest revenue driver?

At the moment, our most popular course is my General Proofreading: Theory and Practice course!

Is there anything else you would like to share with Hero Story readers?

The biggest thing I could share is to get out of your own head and focus on who you are helping instead of your own problems. I know it’s kind of difficult if you’re drowning, so the first thing would be to stop drowning and then focus on solving problems.

You can read more about my journey from working for someone else to building my own company in my book Work At Home.

I’m actually giving it away for free — I just ask you cover shipping and handling.

You can get it here.
